BERKS CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER

The Berks Career and Technology Center (BCTC) is a three (3) year accredited program offering 40 career programs in seven (7) career areas and five (5) technical academies with Reading Area Community College and Bloomsburg University. Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 attend on a half day basis taking required academic courses at Oley Valley High School, while attending BCTC for their career and technical program. Senior students who demonstrate a high level of competency in their program may participate in a supervised work-based learning experience.

APPLICATION PROCESS - Students apply for enrollment through the Guidance Office in October of each year. Applications are submitted by the Guidance Office and to be considered for their first round selection process must be on file at BCTC by December 15.

Senior College Applications

Steps to College Application

1. Review your unofficial transcript with your Parent/Guardian. Any changes to the transcript must be given to the Guidance Office

2. Complete a green TRANSCRIPT RELEASE Form and return it to the Guidance Office. Transcripts will not be released to college/technical schools without a Transcript Release form on file in the Guidance Office.

3. Check NAVIANCE to make sure that your LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATIONS are uploaded in NAVIANCE. If your letters are not uploaded, contact the teachers to inform them you will be applying to colleges shortly.

4. Schedule a SENIOR MEETING with your COUNSELOR

5. Begin to fill out your COLLEGE APPLICATIONS. Applications can be found on the college website.

6. Once you have submitted your application, go to Naviance, move that college from COLLEGES I AM THINKING ABOUT to COLLEGES I AM APPLYING TO. If you completed a common application be sure to match your common app on Naviance.

7. Submit your TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM to your Counselor.

8. SAT/ACT scores are not included on the HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT. SAT scores must be sent by COLLEGE BOARD and ACT by ACT. Log on to your account at these websites to send the scores.

9. Apply for Financial Aid after October 1. Visit fafsa.ed.gov

ACCELERATE YOUR COLLEGE EDUCATION

EARN COLLEGE CREDITS THROUGH RACC DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES

Oley Valley High students can earn college credit while they are in high school through the Dual Enrollment program with Reading Area Community College.

DUAL ENROLLMENT – Participating students will receive credit from both institutions. High school graduation credit will be awarded from OVHS, and transferable college credit will be awarded from RACC. OVHS faculty members on the OVHS campus will teach the courses.

TRANSFERABILITY – RACC maintains a number of articulation agreements with traditional four-year colleges and universities. Since these courses would be traditional college freshman selections, the transferability factor is high. However, students are encouraged to obtain verification by contacting the colleges and universities where they are interested in attending.

TUITION AND FEES – Tuition and fees are established by RACC and are subject to change. Current tuition for the 2020-21 school year is $99 per credit. Bills are sent to the home of the registered students by the RACC cashier’s office. Once a student has registered for a course, should he/she decide to withdraw from the course, the amount of the refund is dependent upon the date RACC receives notice of the intended withdrawal.

TRANSCRIPT – Students can obtain official transcripts by sending a written request (along with $6.00 fee) to: Registrar, Reading Area Community College, P.O. Box 1706, Reading, PA 19603.

TIME LINE – All courses will follow the OVHS school calendar. Dual enrollment registration information can be obtained in the Guidance Office.

SAT & ACT Information

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SAT AND ACT?

Colleges require students to take either the SAT or the ACT. There is no advantage of taking one test over another. Students should choose the test that is best for them. Some students opt to take both tests, as they cover slightly different things.

Subject Content - The ACT includes a science section and the SAT does not. The SAT does test scientific skills, but does not have a science section like the ACT. Both tests include a math section and cover geometry and trigonometry. The SAT covers data analysis and the ACT covers probability and statistics. SAT's essay portion will test you on your comprehension of a source. The ACT will test how well you evaluate and analyze complex issues. As the essay portion is optional in both tests, colleges do not take the score into account during the admissions process.

Length of Test - The length of each of the sections in the SAT and ACT vary between the two tests. The SAT is longer at (3) three hours and 50 minutes with the essay. The ACT is (3) three hours and 35 minutes with the writing section.

Scoring - The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 - 1600, with the ACT scoring on a scale of 1-36. You will only be scored for every correct answer and not penalized for incorrect answers

Cost - The cost of each test varies only slightly.

Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school, but the SAT can be taken at anytime during a student’s high school career. At least half of all students take the SAT twice — in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score the second time around.

Advanced Placement is a program of college level courses and exams that gives motivated students the opportunity to get ahead by earning credits and or advanced placement for college while in High School. The College Board provides high schools with course descriptions of college subjects and the Advanced Placement Exams for those subjects.

Student Assistance Program (SAP)

SAP is a group of specially trained Oley Valley High School teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses and a liaison from Caron Foundation. This voluntary program offers supportive services to students experiencing academic, behavioral and or emotional difficulties that may pose barriers to school success.

The SAP team receives referrals from administrators, faculty, staff, parents/guardians and students themselves. The team assists students with being bullied or harassed, drug or alcohol use/abuse, attendance/truancy, academic concerns, changes in behavior, personal problems, mental health concerns and other issues which cause a student to struggle in and out of school. Support services both in and outside of school are recommended by the SAP team, after working with the student and their families to determine the need for services.

All communication is confidential. No one other than the SAP team will know the students involved in this program.

Family Connection from Naviance is a Web-based service designed for students, parents and counselors. It is a comprehensive website that you can use to help make decisions about courses, colleges and careers. Family Connection provides up-to-date information that is specific to our students at Oley Valley High School. It allows us to share information with you about upcoming meetings, news and events, as well as other Web resources for college and career information.

Naviance provides many uses for families throughout the college search process. It can serve as a direct link for students to college websites and applications and houses information personal to the student such as GPA and test scores. This allows the student to compare their data with that of past Oley Valley graduates who have applied to the same colleges and universities.

PA Bullying Prevention Consultation Line

The Office for Safe Schools, Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), is pleased to announce the availability of the PA Bullying Prevention Consultation Line. The Bullying Prevention Consultation Line is a toll free number that will allow individuals experiencing chronic and unresolved bullying to discuss effective strategies and available resources to deal with school-based bullying. This supportive resource has been developed in collaboration with the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (CHPDP), and is available, at no cost, to students, parents/guardians and school districts across the state of Pennsylvania.

Messages can be left 24 hour a day, seven days a week, and will be returned Monday-Friday during normal business hours. The Consultation Line number is 1-866-716-0424.
